is my determination correct?
Location: Germany, Rhineland-Palatinum, 53572 Unkel, river Rhine valley, Stux hill, dry and warm habitat (grapeyards), nearby deciduous forest (oak, Fagus ...), December (!) 9th, 2025

I think female
E. tenax is correct, but I cannot exclude
E. similis without a more frontal view of the eyes: tenax 2 vertical bands or a lateral view of the hind tibia: tenax completly black

I am 99,9% sure, it is
E. tenax (date!).
But hover flies should better be posted in the Syrphidae subforum...
