Hello to all,
does anybody know this kind of horsefly?
It found me at the slopes of the Cerro Chato, neighbouring mountain of the Arenal in Northwest-Costa Rica at about 800-900m above sea-level. Length about 12-15mm. The unusual position of its left wing was caused by my defensive reaction...

Scione sp.
The pilose eyes and long proboscic suggest Scionini, and the closed M3 cell and patterned scutum show it is Scione. I can't suggest a species, but several Scione in Costa Rica, in particular Scione maculipennis, are tenacious and vicious biters, but pretty in coloration. Note the genus Pangonius is not present in the New World.

this shows that I know nothing from new world. Last time I did a mistake when we saw a tachinid (from new world) and I thought that was a sarcophagid. for old world would be a sarcophagid. :D

Scione maculipennis looks to be a very good ID Keith. Diptera.info viewers: look at Costa Rican Diptera site of INBio <http://www.inbio.ac.cr/bims/k02/p05/c029/o0121.htm>. Follow Tabanidae link to Scione maculipennis, to eventually see this link: <http://darnis.inbio.ac.cr/FMPro?-DB=UBIpub.fp3&-lay=WebAll&-Format=/ubi/detail.html&-Op=bw&id=4448&-Find>. All Tabanidae of Costa Rica are found here (1st of 6 pages): <http://darnis.inbio.ac.cr/ubis/FMPro?-DB=UBIpub.fp3&-lay=WebBrowse&-error=norec.html&-Format=Lista_grupo.htm&-SortField=nombre%20cientifico&-Op=eq&familia::subgrupo_id=270&-Op=eq&visible=Si&-Find>.
