Hi,
a few days a ago I took a picture of a medium-sized fly on one of our bird shelters. It has an orange abdomen and an orange scutellum. I would suspect it could be
Phaonia sp.,, maybe
P. rufiventris (???). Is it possible to confirm or reject this guess from the pictures?
Germany, Southern Bavaria, Munich (-West), Garden, Bird shelter, 25.10.2024, app. 7-8 mm
Greetings, Uli

Hi Uli - no reason to reject! Female
Phaonia rufiventris ist correct!
EDIT: 2 reasons to reject:
1. 2 pairs of strong acr pre (
rufiventris: 0-1)
2. 2 posterior setae on mid tibia (
rufiventris: 3-4)
so it's most probably
P. subventa though scutellum seems to be completely yellow!

Hi Eric,
thank you for your analysis, that is very helpful (especially after I found out what it means :D ).
