Dear Members,
The picture is not of the very best quality, but I think it is Phania funesta in it. But before I put the picture on my website I like to be sure, for I am not a real fly expert.

Hi Hans,
It looks like a rhinophorid to me - definitely NOT Phania funesta - your fly has a huge petiole. The photo reminds me of the
Rhinophora lepida I see in my garden in summer.

Chris is right, a male of Rhinophora lepida it is.
From a distance, you might confuse it with Phania funesta.
The head profile is very different, as is the wing venation.
In the view, both are small black flies, but Rhinophora is clearly the smallest.
The male has typical greyish spots on the abdomen, Phania is completely black

Thank you very much guys. I guess I was paying attention to the firm hairs, which I immediately associated with Tachinidae, hence my mistake. The fly is in none of my books and yet it is a very common species.... That is why this is a good addition to my site. Thanks a lot again.
