Hello,
I photographed this fly near Guardialfiera Lake (CB), Italy, on January 31st 2022. I think it is a
Bibio, but is it possible to identify its species from these photos?

In Spain,,this would B. gineri. Maybe in Italy as well.
Did gou collect one ? If not, please do.

Thank you Theo! I know almost nothing about Bibionidae, so correct me if I'm wrong: shouldn't
B. gineri have completely black legs?
The colouration of the body and legs of this specimen looks more like the one displayed by
B. johannis and
B. femoralis to me. How can these two species be ruled out in this case?

You are totally right ! I just considered the date, I did not expect anything else.
This is indeed femoralis, based on the bouble-coloured hing metatars.

Thank you so much! This species appears to be by far the most common in this time of the year in the Abruzzo and Molise regions.

I did, finally. I collected two males and one female.
I believe the female is a
B. femoralis like the two males, but I'm still not totally sure, so I will post some photos of a live specimen as soon as I get the chance.
