Hello,
What fly is this? The most similar picture I found in the gallery was Cheilosia albipila.
I took the picture in summer near Kyoto.
Thanks.

Hi Michael,
I think it's rather a species of the Cheilosia illustrata complex and in Japan that could wel be C. motodomariensis. Unfortunatelt I have no characters at hand to distinguish them.

This is a Syrphid, which I never managed to observe while in Japan.
Could this be

Ch. bombiformis (Matsumura)?

I admit it resembles a lot, but I wouldn't be able to make a certain ID. Better ask this Japanese guy B)

Thanks for your answers.
My guess now is C. motodomariensis, because both the eyes and the head seem to be pilose. Nevertheless I followed your advice and sent the picture to the japanese syrphidae guy. In case he answers I will inform you, what fly it is.
