It was very actively nectaring so only these poor images but I'll be happy for a family ID.
On an isolated Heracleum sphondylium in a Crataegus-lined path through fields full of Jacobaea vulgaris.

Hi Ray, I think you should add
Tachinidae to your thread's title to attract the expert. My first glimpse led to Phania but this doesn't seem to be right. Unfortunately I could not find a better fit. Do you have more pictures in other angles (even in worse condition) of this fly?

Peteina erinaceus it is! Thanks John |t
I had a suspicion for that but as it seems to be pretty rare I did not dare without more images.

Great! Thanks again. Have never seen it before nor again.
That Heracleum sphondylium was a magnet for so many different insects but unfortunately it's now gone to seed.

That is indeed a rare find in western Europe.

Yes, that is what it is.
Very rare in western Europe ( known from 1-2 localities in NL, at 7 km cycling from my home 😋)
