Hello,

I photographed this fly near Passo delle Capannelle (AQ), Italy, 1400m a.s.l. on June 5th 2021. I think it is a Bibionidae, but is it possible to identify its genus or species from these photos?

Thank you in advance,
Emanuele

The only option is Bibio venosus. Do you have this species ?

Thank you Theo! According to Fauna Europaea and the Checklist of Italian Fauna, B. venosus is not present in Italy.

Yes, I was afraid of that. So either I am wrong or … it is new for Italy. Let me think on that.

You did not collect it, did you ?

It is B. venosus. But this species has already been recorded from Italy (Trentino-Alto Adige) by Vanin (2006: Phenological and altitudinal distribution of Bibionidae in Southern Alps. Studia dipterologica 13: 11-18).
An updated checklist of Bibionidae of Italy can be found in Haenni (2008: Diptera Stelviana. Vol. 1. Studia dipterologica Suppl. 16: 141-146).

That said, this is very much more to the south.
I have the species from the northernmost region in Greece (Prespa)

Thank you both very much! I also have photos of another specimen found in the same area.

You are right, Theo, but it is true that this species is also present in Northern Greece, even farther South.
