Almost right away when I posted this to iNat, I got a suggestion that it was
Boreothrinax. Indeed, that's what it looks like, but it's much bigger than
B. maculipennis, which I get regularly. Could it be
Sphecomyiella? Here's a rough comparison of the size of this fly compared to
B. maculipennis.

S. valida looks to be a good match, but I'm no expert in this family, so best to wait for another opinion.
