That's true - we have a Glossary on diptera.info too, which can be helpful. I try to keep descriptions simple to novices but it is hard to be precise without using buzz-words every now and then ... and it anyway shows that the subject is a bit more complicated than most people give it credit for ;)
Do you have a link for the BC guide - I'd be interested to read it myself to see what kind of advice it gives :)
