Thanks! I think the hairy bands on the eyes are distinctive enough to say it's
E. tenax.
Interesting, that
E. interrupta is listed as 'uncommon' for Ontario. Here it is one of the most numerous
Eristalis, more abundant than
arbustorum, which listed as 'common and widespread' for Ontario. But both species are nearly ubiquitous here and live in the same habitats.
