Small (1 to 6 mm. ) dark brown flies with a scuttling (fast, scrambling, jerking) habit of running very fast across a surface rather than flying. Upright posture, hump-backed appeararance.
Also (and closer)
Strong head bristles (setae).
Very characteristic wing venation. Several short, strong, thickened wing-veins crowded basally. The rest are weak. See photo
One colour usually dark brown (some yellow).No pattern.
Femora laterally flattened.
