Hello,
I was wondering if this very small Tachinid (about 3 mm.) could be Paracraspedothrix montivaga? The picture quality is very low unfortunately...

Seen the 1st of June 2015, Nieuwegein, The Netherlands.

Thanks in advance,

Reindert van Eekelen

If it is really 3 mm., that would be my suggestion. That said, the background is a tree trunk, is that right ? Paracraspedothrix is typically found in grasslands....

Thanks for you reply Theo.

The fly was sunbathing on a wooden bridge railing on the edge of a big lawn (lots of meadows at about 600 meters). The exact location, as well as the same pics with a slightly higher resolution, can be found here:

https://old.waarneming.nl/waarneming/view/190394260?_popup=1

Since I take pictures of flies on this type of wooden bridges in Nieuwegein almost on a daily basis, I'm pretty sure about the size, although not 100% exact (it must have been between 2,5 - 3,5 mm).

I've seen this fly only once in 12 years, so wish I had a better camera with me that day!

Kind regards,
Reindert van Eekelen

Ah, a wooden bridge. That makes sense.
There is a grassland just north of the locality, according to Google Earth (?)

That's right, there's a 6500 square meter lawn north from the bridge.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
