Hello,

I run across this/these fly(ies) two days ago in our garden (northwest Germany) at my banana baits and at night at light. I'm almost sure, that both are the same individual. About 6 mm in length.

Hello Juergen ,

With the four dorsocentrals with dark spots at their base probably Heleomyza sp. One would probably need collected material to identify the species, preferably a male.

Kind regards,

Ectemnius

Not Heleomyza. Anterior orbital bristle is shorter than the posterior. It's a Gymnomus sp. If the abdomen is more grey than should be caesia species group, if not than a member of the spectabilis species-group...

BTW
I have never seen a Heleomyza species with such large dark dots at the base of dorsocentral bristles Wink.

Thank you Ectemnius and Andrzej!

It is not readily visible on the photos, but the abdomen seemed more gray, not orange.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
