Yesterday I go to the field, between "Burgo de Ebro" and "Salada de Mediana", in the middle Ebro valley, Aragon, Spain. The habitat is dry steppe-land, dominated by Artemisia herba-alba, Lygeum spartum, Rosmarinus officinalis, Salsola vermiculata, Gypsophila hispanica and other xeric plants. The fly sizes about 45 mm. It lokks like Asilus in wing colour and size, but the abdomen is entirely black and very sharp-shaped.

Someone could get me an ID?

No... I said in the text "looks like Asilus but the abdomen is ENTIRELY BLACK (half yellow in Asilus crabroniformis) and very sharp-shaped (round-ended in Asilus crabroniformis).
Thanks...

Hello,

yes, I'm sure. The last abdominal tergites are yellow in Asilus crabroniformis as you have already mentioned, but in barbarus these are completely dark. There are more differences, e.g. the colour of the thoracic plate.

Greetings, Danny Wolff

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
