Nearest I could find in the Gallery is Hydrophoria linogrisea (https://diptera.i...to_id=7208) but I'm really not familiar with these.

I'd say this was Muscina levida (Muscidae)

Ouch! I got the wrong Family.
Still got to say it looks nothing like other images of Muscina levida (e.g. https://diptera.i...d_id=85418) to me.

Hello Darwyn, the photo in that linked post contains a male M. levida. Males are very dark blue-grey (blue-gray). Females tend to be much lighter but not always. The bend in the m vein will lead you to Muscidae and particularly Muscina. Also note the rust-colored tip of the scutellum.

I got this one wrong - it's Phaonia valida. (No presutural acrostichals, and bend in M not as marked as in M. levida)
Thanks to Pierre-Yves for the correction!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
