Hello everybody Smile

I need a second opinion on this one … At first I was quite happy to call it Notiphila umbrosa but after having dissected the genitalia I'm more inclined to call it something else. I'm not sure what though. The slightly recurved epandrial processes don't look like the drawings in Drake (2001). They fit neither umbrosa nor riparia as I see it.
The specimen was swept from vegetation along canals on reclaimed land on the island Amager, Denmark, June 21st 2019. A second trip a few days later gave a couple new specimens together with more numerous N. cinerea and a few N. graecula.

Thanks in advance!

All the best,

Trust those first instincts! This looks good for umbrosa to me. The genitalia fit within expected variation (bear in mind that your lateral photo is flipped compared to Martin's drawing).

Thanks, Tony. Yes, always trust first instincts ... This is then the first recording of the species in Denmark to my knowledge.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
