This was taken today Jan 1 2019 southern England, Swindon, Wiltshire.

It is approximately 3.5mm long with 2mm wing length.

I have keyed it to Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae, Metriocnemus, Thienemanniella at which point my confidence ran out.

Could I ask for some help with this please.

Thanking you in advance.

My apologies I couldn't find ocelli and therefore chose the wrong couplet in Stuart Balls and Oosterbroek key, correspondingly went the wrong way.

I've been made aware it is a Mycetophilid, still more learning to achieve.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
