Dear fly specialist,

Long time since my last visit. Normally don't shoot flies anymore because the ID just takes me too much time. Made a "mistake" last Saturday and thought "what the heck, let's give it try again"... silly me .. Shock

Okay, I've landed at Helina impuncta female but obviously the photo is not showing all the details used in the keys (too bad to really tell) ... so, any specialist who dears to ID this "on jizz" or some other gut feeling?

Observation data here on waarneming.nl

Inconclusive previous discussion here on the wrn-forum.

Only the one more or less "usable" image

Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Arp

No opinions so far ...

Should I forget about the species name and leave it at Helina sp. ?

Or is Helina cf. impuncta a fair shot?

What are the other options in the Netherlands ?

Thanks in advance fir any pointers!
Cheers, Arp

since no one of the experts replies... I would say, this is Helina impuncta or depuncta. I don't know, whether there are more, rarer similar species.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hi Jürgen,

thank you for your answer! I had ruled out depuncta due to this specimen having 4 dorso centrals.

From what I had found, impuncta can have 4 or sometimes 3 (giving cause for confusion), but depuncta never 4. But my info may be wrong (?!?) I don't own much literature about flies.

My uncertainty would be about maybe other species with pale legs such as maybe sexmaculata, but probably also others without images in the gallery here ? Frown

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
