Practically no cues how to dtermine these flies. I guess Drosophila testacea, with caution. |

Thanks, Jan! Drosophila testacea seems to be rare around here... |

I would say this is Hirtodrosophila (confusa), the polypore is a good habitat Cheers, Lorin Cheers, Lorin Font Color All requests are from the urban area of Vienna, if not otherwise stated. My Diptera observations (and other living forms) can be found here, and corrections or comments over there would also be appreciated. |

I do not see conspicuous oviprovector of female, nor darkened end of abdomen, which is characteristic for the male of confusa. But - who knows; details are scarcely visible. You may judge according to the body dimensions - testacea is as big/small as melanogaster, confusa is usually twice larger (longer), or even more. |

Hello Gert, I think that Paul is on vacation, so you should bump this post when he returns. I have keys but useful features are not visible, such as arista and mesotibia. However, D. testacea is supposed to have distinct presutural acrostichals, which appear to be absent in the photos. Hirtodrosophila is supposed to have interrupted bands on the abdomen but they appear to be uninterrupted. Otherwise, not a bad suggestion. I think that Drosophila are very difficult to id without a great deal of experience and better photos. Paul may be able to suggest a species when he returns. Also, diptera.info is the best place for dipterists not iNaturalist. John and Nini. Naturalists not experts. |

I pass with these images. Some flies are perhaps not fully coloured making it difficult to jusdge on abdominal pattern. I cannot discern ant larfer presutural setae on the mesonotum so I cannot confitm testacea...

Thanks to all, for your help, ideas and suggestions! I agree that this is a difficult case by lack of better photos, and dimensions. We'll leave it like this, if you all agree. Best regards, Gert |
