I caught this fly after the initial camera shots, but upon opening the vial for closer inspection it escaped. So all I am left with are these images. Is it possible to get to family level?

Vienna, in June

Best regards,
Lorin

Thanks Tony.
I see similar species in the gallery, I just feel the antennae are rather short in my specimen and wonder if this excludes that family?

Cheers,
Lorin

Quite a number of Lonchaeidae have rather short antennae, so I don't think it should be excluded on that character. However, I am thinking that the thoracic bristles are rather strong for Lonchaeidae, and wondering about a female Fannia or Camillidae. Hopefully we'll get some more responses to balance my views! Smile

Lorin

The photos are not very clear but I would be happy to go with Lonchaeidae - as Tony says the length of the antennae can vary but everything else looks OK to me

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
