Are these tiny diptera Chironomidae? They measure about 4 mm. Sorry for the poor quality pictures. Photographed close to a lake, in Vinhedo city, São Paulo state, Brazil. Thank you very much! |

Thank you very much, John!! By the way, I was looking at your avatar picture... are these phoretic mites? It seems like one of my females is carrying a couple as well... attached in the same place! Is it just a coincidence, or are these places preferred by the mites? |

Water mites (Hydrachnidae and related families) are common on Chironomidae. I don't know if their attachment points are random. Also on my Chaoborus picture in the gallery: https://diptera.i...to_id=8740. |
