Aedes cinereus or Ae. geminus (not possible to separate the females morphologically). I am presuming that the female was just resting on the caterpillar - I have never heard of them feeding on one.

Hi, Vladimir I think you've spotted a very interesting and rarely reported phenomenon! You can find more about such behavior in mosquitoes in this paper (http://journals.p...ne.0025658). Very nice photos that worth to be in the Diptera Info's gallery! Edited by Sergiy Filatov on 23-11-2017 22:13 Cheers, Sergiy |

Thank you very much, Sergiy! Frankly, I thought the female mosquito just sat down to relax. But, it turns out that she could feed on the hemolymph of the caterpillar... Regards Vladimir. |

I believe the greyish color on this mosquito leans more towards Aedes rossicus. Aedes cinereus has a more reddish color to the thorax. Very interesting photo by way!

Sadly, I have no personal experience of rossicus - I was going on the contrast between the dark brown tergites and the paler brown notum, which is cited as a feature of cinereus, but literature descriptions are no substitute for specimens!
