Aedes cinereus or Ae. geminus (not possible to separate the females morphologically). I am presuming that the female was just resting on the caterpillar - I have never heard of them feeding on one.

Hi, Vladimir

I think you've spotted a very interesting and rarely reported phenomenon! You can find more about such behavior in mosquitoes in this paper (http://journals.p...ne.0025658).

Very nice photos that worth to be in the Diptera Info's gallery! TumbsUp

Thank you very much, Sergiy!
Frankly, I thought the female mosquito just sat down to relax. But, it turns out that she could feed on the hemolymph of the caterpillar...

Vladimir.

I believe the greyish color on this mosquito leans more towards Aedes rossicus. Aedes cinereus has a more reddish color to the thorax. Very interesting photo by way!

Sadly, I have no personal experience of rossicus - I was going on the contrast between the dark brown tergites and the paler brown notum, which is cited as a feature of cinereus, but literature descriptions are no substitute for specimens!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
