Berlin - October - 8mm male

I think that this fly is a Muscidae species but I cannot match it to a genus. The wing looks odd. The M vein? is curved upward. Plus the species is very dark with a reddish-brown tip of the scutellum.

Thank You for your Time.

Edit: Sir Stephane has identified this specimen. I will add more photos sometime to complete the post for future reference.

From what I can see, it seems to be Muscina levida.

Thanks Stephane. So it is a Muscina. This is my first Muscina. I've never seen one before. I don't have time to examine it. I may not get it under the microscope until next week. I'm just happy to know where to begin with the keys. Even better that you suggest levida. Thank You. Smile

Yes, John, you can retain : red-tipped of scutellum + bent M1+2 = Muscina.
You can remove the "cf" for this one as M. levida is the only species to have this very broad r5 cell at apex (other characters are : palpi, antennae and basicosta and legs all black - there is some yellow on other species).
Stephane.

yes, I have made a mental note. Thank You very much Stephane. I asked my Wife to look at the keys and she mentioned the palpi and antennae being black. I told her that you had mentioned levida and that you are probably correct without seeing a decent photo. Once again, Thank You very much Stephane. You've saved me alot of time. I have some Pollenia to examine, so I have no free time this week. I hope to make time for this by Saturday. I am excited to have my first Muscina under the microscope...

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
