Berlin - September - female I determine this species to be Leiomyza dudai base upon Merz and the online-keys of diptera.info. Confirmation is appreciated. vide attachment photo. I also want to know if these keys are reliable or not? L. dudai is not recorded for Berlin although, it is recorded for Germany. Does anyone have a copy of "Additions to the knowledge of Old World Asteiidae (diptera)" in "Revue Francaise d'Entomologie 23" by Sabrosky (1956)? Of course, I cannot see the whole fly to confirm Leiomyza, but if it is Leimoyza, then it should be dudai.

The whole fly? you don't trust my opinion, Paul? fair enough. I sometimes make mistakes but I'm learning. I figure that the dark haltere, wing venation and thorax are indicative of Leiomyza but I could be wrong. Confirmation is good. Thank You very much Sir Paul. I didn't know the genus during initial examination, so I didn't photograph the orbital versus vertical setae very well. I can re-examine this specimen if you need to see this feature. Otherwise, here is the best photo that I have from my initial examination.

Paul, you can use these photos of the haltere knob and the thorax with your keys. I give you permission to do so. The keys are very nice and helpful. You can show the dark knob. The keys helped me, so maybe this photo can help someone else.

It would not be the first time that someone showed a detail of a fly supoposedly belonging to one genus but not identifiable to species that eventually turned out to belong to another genus.  I figure that the dark haltere, wing venation and thorax are indicative of Leiomyza but I could be wrong. Confirmation is good. You were absolutely spot on, so no worries.

I was just joking Paul I completely understand that you need to see the fly itself. I am an amateur and I do make mistakes from time-to-time. I am just being playful. Thank You very much for confirming this species. Thank You for the email. I only have photos of the dead specimen but I can submit to the gallery. You can use the photo or ignore it. All is good.
