Hello! These Diptera were photographed in small streams in Atlantic Forest, São Paulo State, Brazil. Serra da Cantareira Park - Núcleo Engordador. There were swarms of these insects hovering in the water surface, together with Gerridae and Velidae. I think they are Empididae, but I didn´t found papers describing this behavior, they are common just above the water, but I never found any mention of a really pleustonic species. It seems that they have hydrophobous fur in the legs. Can anybody confirm the ID? Any information about this behavior? Thank you very much!! A video: https://youtu.be/... |

Many species of Hilara and Rhamphomyia (Megacyttarus) swarm low above water, but your fly is neither of those groups. Hilara and, as far as I know, Brazilian relatives, have forked R4+5. If it is tribe Empidini it should be Porphyrochroa. Rhamphomyia has shorter first flagellomere. Macrostomus has a reduced anal lobe. If it is, you should find your species here: http://www.tandfo...0903437333. (I do not have access to the journal.) Edited by John Carr on 08-10-2017 20:16 |
