This fly found in banks of small brook with silt and flowering Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris) in young forest environment in central Netherlands.
Any help with finding its name will be appreciated

I 'up' this one as I would like confirmation or disconfirmation of my conclusion that this is a Lytogaster abdominalis

I think this is Lytogaster abdominalis - the defining character is whether the basal abdominal tergites in the male are split into a dorsal plate and two pleural (lateral) plates. If so, it is Lytogaster, and abdominalis is the only species in Europe. I think this would be new to the Netherlands fauna.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
