any suggestions on this fly from tottenham cemetery? This is the only reasonable shot I managed so I realise a firm id is probably not possible

Hi Jeremy,
This is the one you need to catch, brevirostris is seen far less oftenSmile

following a recent query I'm adding this image - it shows the black area midway on the femora as on signatus, though on brevirostros it's often slighter as can be seen on the middle femur here. On coronatus the leg is clean yellow I believe but for black only at the basal end. I think this is correct though I still can't explain the extra yellow/orange on the head

On brevirostris females the abdomen on dorsal view typically contracts sharply after tergite 5

Hi Jeremy,

I agree with your comments, the yellow frons will have to remain a mystery until you catch a similar one this SummerSmile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
