In an exhibition of insects in a museum, it can be collected in any continent of Earth. I first thought that it was a Mydas sp. but looking closer I saw that is a robberfly. Compare size with a Volucella bombylans in the corner.

Proagonistes sp., a large Laphriine asilid from East Africa or Madagascar (Andrenosomatini - related to Andrenosoma, Pogonosoma, etc.).

Call it 'probably' Proagonistes praeceps (Walker), from S. Africa & Zimbabwe. It looks just like this sp. -- but the ID is still a guess, since the locality of the specimen is unknown.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
