My first thought was Meigenia Smile Do you have better shots of the face?

Would also be nice to see the scutellar bristles a bit better - as many angles as possible please - but that isn't the face of a Campylochaeta Smile

Thank you Chris. I made some detail photos. It is the best I can supply and hope it's sufficient for a species name.

An old ID-book for flies tells me that the bodylength of Meigenia is from 4,0 till 7,5 mm. My species is much bigger. It's 9,7 mm. Is the genus correct?

Hmm, interesting - if I try to key it then I quickly get into species that I am not familiar with (eg. Hemimacquartia paradoxa ) so I am not sure Smile

Which details are needed for a definite genus ID?

Theo might have some good ideas but for me I would need the specimen to key it Smile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
