Don't know if this even is diptera ... This tiny insect was putting eggs in the flowers of (what I think is) Tanacetum vulgare. This was taken today just north of Stockholm, Sweden.

Edit: Changed subject (Unknown diptera?)
Edit: Cecidomyiidae sp

I would call this Cecidomyiidae. in GB we have two species on Tanacetum Rhopalomyia tanaceticola (Karsch, 1879) gall in leaf axil and Ozirhincus tanaceti (Kieffer, 1889) in achene, so likely to be latter, unless there are other species in Sweden.

Rhopalomyia tanaceticola can also cause galls on the flower heads of Tanacetum.

Thnx fellows. I tried finding pictures of these flies or at least a description of how they look, but without luck so far. This one with its white spots on the wing margins could be characteristic ... or not.

These are excellent images of Ozirhincus tanaceti on Tanacetum vulgare. Larvae develop in the slightly swollen bases of florets. A number of other Anthemidae are also hosts, notably Achillea millefolium. Five species of Ozirhincus are currently listed in the world catalogue of Cecidomyiidae.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
