I understand Orthonevra can be hard to ID. Am I in luck or not?

Could be Orthonevra geniculata with those orange patches on the legs, and the very long third antennal segment.

Any confirmation on O. geniculata or other opinions?

Well, thanks for the effort. But I can't make out if there's a brownish clouded vein r-m in the wings, which would make it geniculata.
So in this case, we will have to say: Orthonevra c.f. geniculata/intermedia/stackelbergi.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
