Photographed near Gorizia (Italy) on 1 August 2022. It looks like a Tachinid, but after years of trying to identify it using keys without success, I'm not even sure of the family anymore. Could anyone help me with this?

(Note: The powder the fly is feeding on is sanding dust from synthetic wood paint.)

Thanks in advance for any hints or advice!

Hi Theo,
thank you very much for looking into this and for your advice, but I'm still not sure if Clemelis is the right genus.
Something seems off with the chaetotaxy.
Besides, online you can only find images of two species of Clemelis: C. pullata and C. massilia, and neither of them matches.
Perhaps it could be C. gymnops, or even a different genus altogether.

Yes, we need to rethink this. Arista is strongly thickened, suggesting Siphonini. I discarded this due to the lack of setulae on veins, but some Ceromyia have very few...

Good evening Theo,

Thanks again for taking the time to look at this.

I agree regarding the aristae being thickened for most of their length, a character that would point towards Siphonini. However, there is a different issue: no member of Siphonini has the section of vein M between r-m and dm-cu longer than the section between dm-cu and the bend of M.

As for the bristles on the veins, I only see 3 prominent ones at the base of R4+5, but they do not extend towards the r-m crossvein.

Got it !
Eurysthaea scutellaris, probably a male (based on antennal colouration. Males have proclinate orbitals in this species.)

TumbsUp

Good evening Theo,Thanks to your endless patience and expertise, I have finally managed to identify this Tachinidae that has been haunting me for years.
I would never have made it on my own, thanks again!

Since this genus isn't in the Gallery yet, it would be great to add it, but I’m new to this forum and not sure how it works. Does an administrator add it automatically, or should I do it myself? Thanks for any advice you can give.Best regards,
Andrea Porcile

As far as I know, a user can upload (a)file(s), but then the administrator has to take a look at it and unlock it.
Best regards,
Jürgen
