Hello, I photographed this fly near Casteddu Etzu (OR), Sardinia, Italy, on June 8th 2022. I think it is a Rhinophoridae, but is it possible to identify its genus or species from these photos? Thank you in advance, Emanuele ESant attached the following image: [298.99Kb] Edited by ESant on 09-08-2022 20:16 |

Hi Emanuele, I think it's a male Stevenia deceptoria.
Greetings, Eric Kloeckner |

You need to check Cerretti’paper, there are new species for Sardinia This one looks different from “our” deceptoria. Theo |

Thank you for the input. In Cerretti's "The world woodlouse flies (Diptera, Rhinophoridae)" Stevenia sardoa, which was previously considered a synonym of S. deceptoria, was treated again as a distinct valid species upon further examination of the syntypes. In the same paper it's also stated that "S. sardoa differs from S. deceptoria in having the fore and hind femora at least partly red.". In this specimen the femora seem to be entirely black, so I think that S. deceptoria is still more likely. Are there any other possible species? |
