Hello,

if I see it correctly, this male has dark basicostae (?). Maybe Calliphora loewi? Today at fruit bait in our courtyard (northwest Germany).

Yes, clear candidate C. loewi. Nice work.

Shouldn't the thorax be more striped in C. loewi and the frons narrower? Smile

What about C. uralensis?
differs from loewi especially by:
- gena without a shining white spot
- no dark stripe between the pre acr

Hello,

interesting discussion. Thanks to all! I should have tried to get better photos. I took some additional today, but most showed clearly C. vicina. Only one male seemed to have dark basicostae. But unfortunately the pics are not better than those yesterday... Frown
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hallo Jürgen, I forgot to list the frons which is an important character and Johan pointed to that.
Key in "Blowflies..." by Knut Rognes:
loewi: frons narrower than distance between posterior ocelli
uralensis: frons 1.5 times distance between posterior ocelli includive

And IMHO your last photo shows this.

I am very uncomfortable telling uralensis from loewi apart from pictures, that is why I used ‘candidate’. You might be right, but zi don’t / didn’t expect uralensis at Juergen’s.
But then again, I also didn’t expect rohdendorfi in Poland …
Dark vittae on thorax should be considered from behind.

So, you might be right. I would like to be dead sure.

And one (big! 1600x1600 pixels) from another specimen of which I am not sure, if it is the same species.

Hi Jürgen, I'm quite sure, that your last photo shows a male C. vicina: Tergit 3 has a shifting pattern and basicosta doesn't seem to be black (vicina: "basicosta pale, can be infuscated, brown but not entirely black", O. Sivell). To be "dead sure" you should try to make clear lateral shots, showing anterior spiracle, gena etc.

Thanks! I will try, when the weather gets better (permanently raining today...) and the flies still come to my baits. But I'm afraid, I will not be able to provide (microscope) photos of the genitalia, as I am photographing live animals only...
Best regards,
Jürgen
