Since a week the numbers of Pollenia are greatly increasing in a yellow pan trap in my garden. They consist mostly of Pollenia rudis and some P. angustigena and P. pedicellata, but I key out one female with orange antenna as Pollenia viatica. That species should only fly in summer according to literature. If I interpret the characters correctly it has 2 anterodorsal bristles on the middle tibia, small yellow hairs posteroventrally on the hind femur and the tip of the palpi reddish-orange. Am I correct in the identification of Pollenia viatica?

Hi Paul,

how many pv on t1? i'm not convinced yet. The lunula and basicosta appear to be brown. The photos are not of the best quality so i will have to rely on missing data. We definitely need to know how many pv are on t1 and how many marginal scutellar bristles does it have?

Best wishes,
John

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply. I looked yesterday again at the specimen and compared it with other Pollenia's. I had misinterpreted the colour of the hairs postventrally of the hind femur, they are black. I now think it is just a Pollenia rudis, the other characters seem to fall within the range of that species.

I will look again at the specimen somewhere next days to answer your questions about the number of pv on t1 and marginal scutellar bristles.

Best wishes,
Paul
