Given the triangular mark on the head and the shaded wings, I would say this is Nephrotoma quadrifaria quadrifaria (Meigen, 1804).

Thanks Pjotr, I will look at it again. I followed one route in the keys for the shape of the dark patches on the abdomen which may have been the wrong route. The postnotum does have mainly black hairs I think, if I'm looking in the correct place. The wings appear to have a dark band but I thought there's a dark area on the tail end showing through, maybe I'm looking at that wrongly! awkward
