Hi all, I've been getting these flies in pan traps from oilseed rape crops. I've keyed them out to Ephydridae, these are commonly known as shore-flies and are rarely found away from water. Their habitat doesn't really fit with when they were sampled (oilseed rape field bordered by agricultural grassland). Could they be Drosophilidae without an anal cell? Everything else matches to Drosophilidae apart from it not having an anal cell. Cheers Toby toyle attached the following image: [83.94Kb] Edited by toyle on 11-12-2015 13:42 |

Head and mouth parts in my view suggest Ephydridae

I'd suggest Hydrellia - not always found near water. In fact the commonest British species (H. griseola) mines the stems and leaves of grasses, and may be found miles away from the nearest water bodies.
