I had originally had this down as (another) Scat(h?)ophagid, but it looks wrong to me, so I'm suggesting that it may be a muscid (which probably means that's wrong, too). Any help? 13 August 2011 In a domestic garden, Bosham, West Sussex. Will van Niekerk attached the following image: [180.93Kb] Edited by Will van Niekerk on 13-03-2012 22:27 |

I'd say it's a male Coenosia tigrina, in which case you would be quite right. |

C. tigrina looks right, although I may be blinded by the possibility of having got one right... Thanks, Will. Edited by Will van Niekerk on 02-03-2012 18:50 |

I think it is related species C. humilis: 1. dark spots on scutum around places of seta's insertion are absent; 2. parafacial seems narrow; Nikita Vikhrev - Zool Museum of Moscow University |

Looking at images of both in the gallery (and particular one of C. tigrina chowing down on a congener), is there a big size difference? Because while this one wasn't a complete midget, C. tigrina looks big enough that I'd remember it for some time. In the absence of knowing what role size would play here, and hoping that I'm seeing the right area when looking at images of C. humilis, its general spottiness is more in keeping, so changing the title that way, now. Thanks, Will. |

I'm not sure size is a good guide here. I'd go with Nikita if I were you |
