i snapped this fly the other day in my back garden. i live in the UK ,england, and have never seen anything like this in our country. the last thing i saw that looked remotly like this was a large moth in greece, which was collecting nectar from flowers.. in the same way a humming bird would i supose. at first i thought it was a small bee, then on closer inspection saw it had a large black proboscus/ nose sticking out of the face of it.. any ideas what it is called... sry some problem uploading picture... Look forward to seeing the picture . In the mean time, have a look at Bombylius major in the Gallery. Stephen. |

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like Bombylius major - a beefly ... an outside chance of it being the flower-bee Anthophora plumipes. Check the photo-upload guidelines and re-upload the photo: must not have spaces or unnecessary punctuation in the file name; and must be <190KB in size Manager of the UK Species Inventory in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, London. |
