how do you measure it? do you have a specimen?

I do not think that it matches cingulata.
here is a valid cingulata (in my opinion according to Meigen 1820):
https://diptera.i...d_id=80130

the yellow bands are very narrow before and after the very broad yellow band of t4.
the bands on the species in your photo are too broad.
it looks more like abbadon but I see no records for this in Slovenia.

Measuring is done with prog. of mine, later digitaly.
In short, if you do photo at known focusing distance, then you know what is resulting image width, all the rest is calculable.

And , yes , if abbadon matches this: https://diptera.i...ost_336604
then mine is abbadon and not cingulata - compared wing venation.

Thanks.

I do not agree with cingulata. I do not agree with abbadon. I mentioned abbadon as an example. The wings must be almost 2 times longer than the body to be abbadon. The species in the photo that you link to fits abbadon.

The species in your photo is something else. I will try to deduce what it could be but Villa are difficult to identify. I suggest that you name it Villa sp. for now.

Wing venation is the same for all Villa. Only color, infuscation and patagium change.

OK, Villa sp. then. But do look at pointed curve and around, I don't think that is the same.

I disagree with cingulata.

My first impression is abbadon but the size doesn't match. The length of the wings proportionate with the body is a close match to abbadon as well.

I do not have a list of Villa for Slovenia. I cannot find Slovenia for many species at faunaeuropaea either.

I will look at this more today when I have time to do so ...

edit: even when one considers male versus female. I still have to disagree with cingulata. The description doesn't match here.

I think that this species matches the description of Villa circumdata in Meigen 1820.

V. circumdata has been divided into Villa fasciata and Villa longicornis by some authors.

Villa fasciata should have more reddish brown on the wings than the species in your photo but the lighting makes it difficult to see the wings clearly. Size matches well here. Some authors think that longicornis is a subspecies of fasciata.

I recommend labelling it Villa cf fasciata.
Perhaps someone else has a different opinion.

I hope that you have a Wonderful Day.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
