Hi all,
As part of my PhD research I am conducting macroinvertebrate surveys in chalk rivers in the UK. While I'm pretty good with most families of invertebrates, diptera are a weak spot for me. It doesn't help that I only have a very basic guide where the major diptera families are described with images rather than proper keys.
Basically, I only really need to know the family, but I'd be interested to learn the species too. From my basic guide, it looks like this might be Muscidae, but I am by no means anywhere near confident.
Any help gladly received!

Ephydridae, possibly Setacera but I cannot see if they have rows of ventral hooks. If not, perhaps Scatella. ID to species level is impossible. The left one appears to have ventral pseudopods with larger hooks unlike the other 2, so perhaps 2 different genera.

I didn't actually notice the ventral pseudopods when I was trying to ID it. That was where I must have gone wrong. They're quite cryptic!
