I found it last Saturday on a Galactites tomentosa flower, North of Huelva Province, Andalusia. 485 masl. A big fly, about 14 mm length. 1/4

Yes, indeed a Pangonius.
The genus is in need of a revision.
I'll see what I can do.

I was afraid of this: it is either variegatus or granatensis.
I am not (yet) convinced that granatensis is really a bona fide species...
