I found this 3mm long fly running on Acer leaves today (29 May) on the edge of mixed woodland in N Scotland.

Can anyone suggest even a family that I can chase up, please?

I'm non-expert: To me it looks like Hybotidae, Tachydromia sp. (see http://www.diptera.info/photogallery.php?photo_id=8537)

Looks spot on, Kuv. Thanks - I will get the key and post any verdict.

It keys out convincingly from the key at http://www.dipteristsforum.org.uk/documents/Tachydromia_Revised_Key.pdf as Tachydromia umbrarum, female, so unless anyone suggests caution I will run with that. Another excellent result from this splendid site.
