Is it possible to say which genus it belongs to? It was caught in a pitfall trap on a seashore. It is 7 mm long.

The last shot suggests that it is a Hydrophoria or Hylemya (plumose arista, unfortunately out of focus in shot 1). The setulose scutellum on most of the surface suggests Hydrophoria. It is a female which makes it more difficult, but it could be Hydrophoria lancifer?

What can I check on the specimen to confirm that it is Hydrophoria lancifer?

Its prealar bristle is longer than the posterior notopleural which indicates H. lancifer as far as I understand?

If the proboscis is shining black, than Hydrophoria lancifer seems right.
As Michael already suggest..

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
