Bred from rotting Honey Fungus (Armillaria) collected from base of young tree in park, Ipswich, Suffolk on 29-Sept-2014. Adult found on 21-Oct-2014.

I thought female Drosophila picta or Hirtodrosophila cameraria. The specimen is quite dehydrated so I am posting these photos before trying to wet it (as that usually ruins my flies!).

Is it possible to determine the sex and species from these photos, please?

Best wishes,
Martin

OK. Thanks Paul. I think I should give these little flies a day or two to grow up before killing them.

Regards,
Martin

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
