Hello,

I assume, these two black 3.5 mm flies from the forest border (northwest Germany) are the same species. But I am not even sure, if they are calyptrate flies (Anthomyiidae? Muscidae?).

BTW: Saw the first Syrphidae here this afternoon: http://insektenfo...post283593

Possibly Egle (dark, hairy, early spring, costa swollen near end of R1).

Thanks a lot, John. That genus was what I also had in mind, when I mentioned Anthomyiidae. They often visit catkins in early spring here, but in the moment the willows in our garden are not fully flowering, yet.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hello again,

this afternoon there were many of these (or similar?) flies around, but they seemed to be a little bit bigger (about 4.5-5 mm). Among numerous males I only saw one female (last picture). At least I assume it is a female of that species...

Larger pictures can be found here

Should be Egle ciliata and/or brevicornis, both especially hairy species with four postsutural acrostichal bristles.

In America multiple species of Egle can be found together.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
