Hello all,
This one was rather frustrating to photograph, as it kept perching on a tall fern in the middle of a stream, so that I could neither come close or take a view from the top... Anyway, such as it is, is it possible to id it from this single picture ?
Bois de Lauzelle, Louvain la neuve, Belgium.
May 2008.
Size was distinctly larger than a house fly, more like a good sized Blue Bottle.

TIA
Philippe

Kind of little to go on. I can't tell whether the eyes are bare or hairy.
If they are hairy, I don't see reclinate verticals, so I'd go for the male Ernestia rudis, which agrees with the abdominal shape.

Thanks Theo. I went back to the original picture, trying to boost it to see if the eyes are hairy or not. Not quite clear, but I would say they probably are. So I'll go for a tentative Ernestia rudis.
Cheers
