I was able to identify these flies as Curtonotidae. Is there anyone able to identify the genus or even the species? Suriname, Para, Berlijn (savanna belt), V-2012, at light. Thanks, Scarabaeoid Auke attached the following image: [143.55Kb] Edited by Auke on 01-04-2013 17:07 |

Family is correct, but I have no information on Neotropical species.

Curtonotum, the only New World genus, was revised last year in Zootaxa 3079. That is not one of the free issues and I have not read it. |

Thank you Paul Beuk (for confirming the family) and John Carr (for reveiling the genus). Who knows, maybe someone will eventually be able to even reveal the species. Regards, Scarabaeoid |

I have received an answer from Mr. John Klymko, first author of the 2008 key. According to him, it is with 90% certainty a Curtonotum pantherinum, the most common species and one that is known from Guyana. He is not able to give a 100% ID from this photo (the only one I got) alone. Best regards, Scarabaeoid |
